Frit Casting in Clay with Martine Marceau

This exciting new class is offered by clay and glass artist Martine Marceau.

In two sessions students will learn how to create a clay mould for casting a glass leaf. Martine will demonstrate how to prepare the mould and how to manipulate the shape of the glass in hot and cold techniques. Each student will create a clay mould and a glass leaf. These techniques can be adapted for all kinds of cast glass designs. Both clay and glass can be fired in the kilns at Current Works of Glass.

Glass Mala Bracelets with Charlotte & Bead making demo by Sandra Allen

mala (plural malas or mala) A bead or a set of beads for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra.
Join Charlotte on the riverbank for a peaceful afternoon stringing a glass bead bracelet and learning how to use a mala for meditation. This is an afternoon of learning that will have lasting benefits.

Coasters Workshop

Learn to create six glass coasters using a variety of glass in the studio.

No experience necessary as all instruction is provided. Each student will create their own designs in the colours of their choice. The glass will be fired in our kilns and ready for pick up within a week. A lovely wood coaster holder is included for each student.

$55/student includes all glass, instruction, and coster holder

Mark Making on Paper and Glass

 

Gestural intuitive marks all made by you. What is your mark? 

This is an exciting and very liberating method of creating beautiful art.

Join accomplished calligrapher and abstract artist Karen Wynne Mackay for a morning of discovery. Work on paper with handmade and machine made tools, ink, gesso and paint -explore your creative mark making side.

We will have a break for lunch (weather permitting) by the river. Please bring your lunch or you can pop out to Carleton Place for something (fifteen minute drive from the studio). Complimentary beverages are provided.

Then in the afternoon you will discover how to translate your mark making into glass. Each student will create two 4″x6″ glass art pieces that sit in a cork wood base. These are unique sculptural pieces that look wonderful in natural light or with a candle. We will use powdered glass, hand pulled glass, and crushed glass with a variety of tools.

Trees Workshop (full day)

Now this will be a fun day!

The dynamic and crazy talented Kate Green will be at the studio for a special visit to teach how to sketch and draw trees.

After approximately two hours of instruction with Kate there will be a lunch break. Please bring something to eat. Beverages are provided. If weather permits we can eat outside by the river and under some lovely old trees.

In the afternoon we will explore techniques for producing trees in glass using glass powder and crushed glass. Each student will create a 6×6″ glass tree scene. This glass can be curved if you would like it to stand on its own. Jennifer will be guiding the afternoon session.

Beginner Fused Glass

Our original four session course has been combined into two four hour sessions so you will get all the information you need to get started in two visits. This course is a great introduction to fusing and art glass techniques. You will learn to create a number of projects from jewellery to plates. Once finished you will not only have beautiful art to display but you will also have an excellent grasp of how glass behaves at different temperatures as well as the basics for many different techniques. Each student will create a bowl, a platter, a few small dishes and coasters, a pendant, and an ornament. This introduction will give you the skills required to rent studio time and further your practice in glass. Careful glass is very addictive!

Colourful Landscape in Powder

This is a two class project for students with previous fused glass experience.

This 6″x8″ all glass landscape is created entirely with glass powders. We will also create a glass base to display the finished piece.

Vitrigraph Demo

Learn how to set up a vitrigraph kiln, pull a variety of shapes, create patterns and marbling. Each student will have a collection of vitrigraph stringer to use in their future glass projects.
No experience necessary but people who have taken the intro to fusing or equivalent will get the most out of this demonstration.

$10/person (must register in advance)

Bowling Parties

All the fun of our other parties but this time each participant creates a 10″ bowl and two pendants. Clear circles are pre-cut then participants use various colours and types of glass to create the design. Minimum three and maximum nine participants.

Couples Night

Grab your mate and come to the studio for a new and fun experience! Each couple will create a large bowl using a variety of techniques. No experience is necessary but experienced glass artists will also get some new ideas. All tools and glass is provided to make a 13-15″ bowl or platter (each couple chooses their preferred shape/size). BYOB

Private Bookings require a minimum of three couples and a maximum of four couples.

$150/couple (includes snacks and non-alcohol beverages)

Photography in Glass for Beginners

This shorter introduction to photography in glass gives students a taste of the process on a two layer 5″x6″ glass arc. In two sessions students will create their own standing glass image.

Prerequisite: Intro to Fusing or equivalent

Make a Pendant-book any time!

Contact Jennifer at currentworksofglass@gmail.com to book any day and time that suits. There is no minimum number to participate so book for one person or several. This is a one hour session without glass cutting. We have loads of colourful glass in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Your assembled pendant will go in the kiln and be ready for you within 48 hours.

Cost per student for one pendant: $10

PARTY NIGHTS (or days)

Pick a night (or during the day) and grab some friends for a unique experience!

Choose from a variety of options such as pendants, sun-catchers or coasters and mosaic 8×10″ dishes. Spend approximately two hours playing with glass and visiting with friends. At the end of the evening your creations go into the kiln. Finished pieces are ready for pick up within a week. This class offers a little bit of glass teaching and a lot of creativity and laughter. Note: the next session of the photos in thick glass will be in January 2018. We will be offering a mini two session course in October 2017. Details coming soon!

Here it is! This class has been requested so many times I have lost count. It is a tricky one to plan so it took me a while to work out the details.

Students will learn how to embed photography into thick fused glass. We will work on how to prepare your photographs, design and composition of the photo and the finished glass piece, adding powdered glass designs for additional depth and interest, and planning for multi step complex glass art.

Fused Tiles & Roll Ups

Learn Hot Combing or Pattern Bar Techniques at Current Works of Glass


Hot Combing and Pattern bar techniques are wonderful for decorative panels, bowls, platters, dishes, and even jewellery. They are also great as tiles for blown glass roll ups. We are offering private lessons on both techniques. Each tile involves approximately three visits to the studio to learn the different steps.

Intro to Sandblasting

No previous glass experience is required. This two hour session offers students an introduction to sandblasting on glass. Students will use the drill press to drill a hole in a glass base then sandblast an image. We will use glass ornaments as our “test piece”. Once students complete this intro course they are welcome to rent time on the sandblaster. Note: any glass can be etched in our sandblasting room. Once you have learned the basics you can bring in wine glasses, vases, anything glass and personalize it.
